Every step exists for a reason. The ones that get skipped are exactly the ones that bring the problem back.

Locating
Position between rafters, sill height, orientation. We check the planning rules if the facade is visible from the street.
Opening
Cutting through roof covering and the battens, a trimmer if needed.
Fitting the frame
Levelling, fixing, roofing underlay connected.
Flashing kit
Joint matched to the material: tile, slate, corrugated sheet.
Interior finish
Reveal insulated and boarded, square return at the top, splayed at the bottom.

Your questions

Do you need a permit?

Often not for a window in the plane of the roof, sometimes yes depending on the municipality and the area. We check beforehand, which saves a nasty surprise.

Which size to choose?

The width depends on the spacing between the rafters. We measure before ordering: that is what stops anyone butchering the roof timbers.

Can it be applied to a slate roof?

Yes, with the matching flat flashing kit. The kit is not the same as for a profiled tile.

And condensation?

It comes from a lack of ventilation, not from the window. A reveal cut square at the top and sloped at the bottom lets air circulate against the glazing.

Do you replace an existing roof window?

Yes, and it is often half a day: the new frame takes over the existing opening when the dimensions match.

Do you fit blinds and shutters?

Yes, at the same time. That is the right moment: the joint is open and the feed is run cleanly.
